COULD (podía) es el pasado de CAN (puede)

COULDN'T (no podía es el pasado de CAN'T (no puede)

PRESENT               PAST
CAN                      COULD
CAN'T                   COULDN'T

AFFIRMATIVE 

In affirmative, to say "PODÍA" we have to write "COULD" before the verb. For example:
SHE COULD sing (Ella podía cantar)
HE COULD play the guitar (El podía tocar la guitarra)

NEGATIVE

In negative, to say "NO PODÍA" we have to write "COULDN'T" before the verb.  For example:

HE COULDN'T dance (Él no podía bailar)
SHE COULDN'T eat pizza (Ella no podía comer pizza)
